About Species and D&D Overlap
As with many fantasy stories, the species present in the storyline of Project Star have an overlap with races prevalent in the game of Dungeons and Dragons. However, there is a distinction that can be made between the species of these two narratives. While similar names do exist between the two, the behaviors, traditions, and actions of the species have major differences. Here's a quick insight into the way that species are approached in the Project Star storyline.
Nymphs. A traditional figure of Greek mythology, nymphs are female maidens who are seen as symbols of tradition, femininity, and fertility. In the Project Star storyline, nymphs cross the gender barrier and can be both man and woman. The uniting feature that makes a nymph a nymph is 1) blood from a god or a goddess, and 2) being the favorite child of that god or goddess. Children who descended from gods and goddesses who are not the favorite child become aasimars, beings with celestial blood who do not contain the same characteristics as nymphs. Because of the rarity of nymphs, the families they come from are particularly important in social life and are often regarded with high status. Nymphs are also given charge of whatever landscape their parent god/goddess descends from, i.e. mountain nymphs are in charge of the mountains. Within Ostaria, there are three types of nymphs, and each type of nymph has a ruling family. For the mountain nymphs, the ruling family is that of which Zenith (see: Protagonist Information) descends from. The other nymphs of Ostaria are forest nymphs (Dryad) and sea nymphs (Nereid). Other species of nymphs exist in the world, but these are the only ones that reside in Ostaria.
Teiflings. Teiflings, in Dungeons and Dragons lore, are cursed by Asmodeous, ruler of the Nine Hells. In the storyline of Project Star, teiflings are considered descendants of ancient demons. They are a dying species due to the extinction of demons long ago, but there are still clans which exist within the world and across different nations. They are not exactly viewed kindly and have stereotypes associated with their nature, but they are also not necessarily discriminated heavily within governmental or city structures. There are some conservative villages within Ostaria, however, that do not take kindly to tieflings. Yaiomira (see: Protagonist Information) is a half-tiefling, mixing blood with a human.
Elves. Elves, as a whole, is a species that originated both from Lord of the Rings and from Dungeons and Dragons. Within the Project Star storyline, their characteristics contain some similarities. However, to create a distinction between the two, the traditions of the elf clans in Ostaria are completely unique to the Project Star storyline. Many different types of elves exist in the world, but the five that are most common (and discussed) in Ostaria are high elves, wood elves, sea elves, snow elves, and moon elves. In the rest of the world, there also exist sun elves and dark elves; however, they are not discussed in detail in the main storyline.
